1912: Locked in an eerily quiet dining room on the Titanic, a mysterious man tells a young girl his life story as the ship begins to sink. It all starts in Whitechapel, London in 1888.... In the small hours of the night in a darkened Whitechapel alley, young Mary Kelly stumbles upon a seriously injured man almost unconscious in the gutter. Two days later, an American gentleman wakes in a hospital bed with no memory of who he is or how he got there.… Back in 1912, as the Titanic begins its final shuddering descent, the truth behind a series of murders that have hung like a dark fog over London for more than two decades is about to be revealed.... 1. The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair that Changed America | Summary Book Preview: In 1912, Daniel Burnham and his family are aboard the RMS Olympic, the second largest cruise ship in the world and sister ship to the Titanic. Burnham has gained fame and wealth from aiding in the construction of the World's Fair at Chicago in 1893. Nearly two decades later, Burnham is 62 years old and unable to enjoy the cruise ship outside of his room due to his foot injury. While he's confined, Burnham delivers a message to Frank Millet, a dear friend aboard the Titanic. In light of the Titanic's accident, the message is rejected. This news distresses Burnham, because Millet was one of the only living supporters of the Chicago Fair since its completion in 1893, and inspires him to share the events of the era. A heart-warming novel about Kaspar the Savoy cat, from the award-winning author of Born to Run and The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips. Kaspar the cat first came to the Savoy Hotel in a basket - Johnny Trott knows, because he was the one who carried him in. Johnny was a bell-boy, you see, and he carried all of Countess Kandinsky's things to her room. But Johnny didn't expect to end up with Kaspar on his hands forever, and nor did he count on making friends with Lizzie Beth, a spirited American heiress. Pretty soon, events are set in motion that will take Johnny - and Kaspar - all around the world, surviving theft, shipwreck, and rooftop rescues along the way - because everything changes with a cat like Kaspar around. After all, he's Prince Kaspar Kandinsky, Prince of Cats, a Muscovite, a Londoner and a New Yorker, and as far as anyone knows, the only cat to survive the sinking of the Titanic…. 1. From the NYT bestselling author of Mister O, comes a hot and hilarious new standalone. Here's what you need to know about me - I'm well-off, well-hung, and quick with a joke. Women like a guy who makes them laugh - and I don't mean at the size of his you-know-what. No, they want their funny with a side of huge, not to mention loyal. I've got all that plus a big bank account, thanks to my booming construction business. Yup. I know how to use all my tools. Enter Natalie. Hot, sexy, smart, and my new assistant. Which makes her totally off limits...Hey, I'm a good guy. Really. I do my best to stay far away from the kind of temptation she brings to work. Until one night in Vegas...Yeah, you've heard this one before. Bad news on the business front, drowning our sorrows in a few too many Harvey Wallbangers, and then I'm banging her. In my hotel room. In her hotel room. Behind the Titanic slot machine at the Flamingo (don't ask). And before I can make her say "Oh God, right there, YES!" one more time, we're both saying yes - the big yes - at a roadside chapel in front of a guy in press-on sideburns and a shiny gold leisure suit. But it turns out what happened in Vegas didn't stay in Vegas. And now my dick doesn't stay in my pants when she's around. But the more we try to keep our hands to ourselves, the more we end up naked again, and the more time I want to spend with her fully clothed, too. The question is...do I take this woman to be my ex-wife? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Sebastian York. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/066524/bk_acx0_066524_sample.mp3. April 15, 2012, marked 100 years since the Titanic sank. Since that fateful night, stories about the sinking have become legendary - how the band played to the end, how lifeboats were lowered half-empty - but amongst the films, novels and academic arguments, only those who were there can separate truth from fiction. After the sinking, inquiries into the loss of 1,517 lives (out of 2,223 aboard) were held in both the UK and US. The proceedings produced 1,000 pages of transcripts. Some of the testimonies were inevitably less than impartial, but as a whole the transcripts represent the most thorough and complete account of the sinking, told in the voices of those who were there. For the first time these transcripts have been specially edited and arranged chronologically, so that they tell the story of the Titanic's sinking as a narrative, rather than a list of questions and answers in a courtroom. The witnesses are transformed into characters in a much bigger story, and the events are described from different perspectives of people in every part of the ship, from a stoker in the boiler room escaping his section before the water tight doors sealed behind him, to first class passengers trying to buy their way onto lifeboats. Capturing the disbelief, the chaos and the terror of the disaster, this unique book brings to life the tragedy through the voices of those who survived it. 1. Language: English.
