Titanic Requiem,The(Composed By Robin Gibb&RJ Gibb: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
In memory of Lieut.-Colonel Alexander Seton, Ensign Alex. C. Russell, and forty-eight N.C.O.s and men of the 74th Highlanders who were drowned at the wreck of HMS Birkenhead on the 26th February 1852, off Point Danger, Cape of Good Hope, after all the women and children on board had been safely landed in the ship´s boats. (The inscription on a memorial in St. Giles´ Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland) ´´To take your chance in the thick of a rush, with firing all about, Is nothing so bad when you´ve cover to ´and, an´ leave an´ likin´ to shout; But to stand an´ be still to the Birken´ead drill is a damn tough bullet to chew, An´ they done it, the Jollies - ´Er Majesty´s Jollies - soldier an´ sailor too! Their work was done when it ´adn´t begun; they was younger nor me an´ you; Their choice it was plain between drownin´ in ´eaps an´ bein´ mopped by the screw, So they stood an´ was still to the Birken´ead drill, soldier an´ sailor too´´ (Rudyard Kipling, ´´Soldier an´ Sailor Too´´) In an emergency it is a common practice to attempt to evacuate women and children first, not simply because they´re the most vulnerable but because it´s an established code of honor that has been passed down through generations. This is especially the case in situations where there aren´t enough resources to rescue everyone, and this concept has been made famous by disasters such as the sinking of the Titanic, which didn´t have enough lifeboats onboard for everyone. Although the ´´women and children first´´ rule might seem like a common practice that has been observed for centuries, it was actually popularized by the 1852 shipwreck of the Royal Navy troopship HMS Birkenhead. 1.
Rome 1959. Along the Via Veneto, the living and the dead enjoy la dolce vita, as the vampires, intellectuals, conspirators, jet-setters and swindlers of Europe gather in an endless round of indulgence and gaiety, dancing giddily to the music of the Dracula Cha Cha Cha. The Vampire King, in Italian exile, is to be married to a Moldavian princess, and rumours circulate that his wedding will be the first move in a campaign to return him to his position as Lord of the Undead and a power in the world. In the eternal city, three corpses in the Fontana di Trevi lead three vampire women towards the destinies of their hearts. A flamboyant murderer stalks the elder vampires of the city, perhaps intent on wrecking the Royal Marriage; an undead British secret agent with a license to kill is swept up in a titanic conflict with the supernatural agents of Smersh; a living American opportunist sees a way of surviving as a parasite upon the dead; and a creature older even than Count Dracula is awakened to decide the fates of lovers and monsters. From the author of Anno Dracula and The Bloody Red Baron comes this novel of horror and mystery, romance and intrigue. 1. Language: English. Narrator: William Gaminara.
For the first time in a thousand years, the Kingdom of the Isles has a government and a real ruler: Prince Garric of Haft. The enemies joining against him intend to destroy not only the kingdom but humankind as well. The rebels gathering in the West outnumber the royal army and the magic they wield can strike into the heart of the palace itself, but far greater dangers lie behind those. On the far fringes of the Isles, ancient powers ready themselves for a titanic struggle in which human beings are mere pawns - or fodder! Reptilian and insect monsters from out of the ages march on the kingdom, commanded by wizards no longer human or never human at all. If unchecked, their ravening slaughter will sweep over the Isles as destructively as a flood of lava. Garric, ripped from his time and body, must make new allies if he and his kingdom are to survive. His sister Sharina struggles with the chaos threatening the kingdom as swords and wizardry both gather to bring it down. Their friend Cashel, thrown into a place not of his world, faces each succeeding challenge with the calm certainty that he will overcome it or die, and that nothing yet has been able to kill him. And while her comrades strive in their own fashions, Ilna studies a pattern more complex than perhaps than even she and the skills she learned in Hell can master. If she fails, humanity will never escape the web being woven for it. Watching them all from the blackness of a tomb walled off in time and space, the Mistress waits…And her fangs drip poison! 1. To Great Britain and Germany, the Battle of the Denmark Strait came like a thunderclap in the spring of 1941. The pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Hood, was utterly destroyed, and its newest battleship, Prince of Wales, severely damaged and forced to withdraw. This was at the hands of Germany s huge battleship Bismarck, on its first foray into North Atlantic waters. The blast of heavy shells between the behemoths resonated both in Whitehall and Berlin. However, despite the wealth of documentary information and photographic evidence available on the battle, there continues to be controversy as to how the conflict was actually fought. This book attempts to resolve the remaining issues by a detailed technical analysis of the circumstances, while new discoveries, revealed for the first time in this book, shed new light on the battle in which the best of both navies traded salvoes and over 1,500 Royal Navy sailors were obliterated.By carefully considering the factors affecting naval gunnery, such as flight time of shells to their target, reaction time for correcting the fall of shot, and recycle times of the various gun systems, the battle has been painstakingly reconstructed in this book within all of the established time and distance parameters. Not limited to the battle itself, the book also explores the relevant events leading up to the titanic clash, and those events associated with its aftermath.Being a graduate mechanical engineer and professional analyst associated with fielded military weapon systems, the author is uniquely qualified to perform the analytic functions involved in the reconstruction of the battle. His last position was as staff analyst where he provided support to the Federal government in the evaluation of the U.S. Strategic Missile Defense System, and he is also author of the highly acclaimed work, Naval Shipbuilders of the World From the Age of Sail to the Present Day.REVIEWS ...aficionados of naval engineering and gunnery will particularly find stimulating...features evocative photographs and maps, excellent diagrams and drawings, and a very useful bibliography and reference to key documents from Germany and Britain. ...All in all, this is a most useful perspective..., the book is a worthwhile work that will both inform and stimulate its readers.Naval Historical Foundation The Battle of the Denmark Strait is done justice in this well-written book which reflects Bob Winklareth s background and reputation as a military analyst .a very helpful, thorough contribution to the understanding of the classic Bismarck-Hood drama, worthy of addition to many libraries. Bob Dulin, Retired USN Engineering Duty Officer, Co-Founder of the SNAME Marine Forensics Committee co-author of the classic three-volume World War II Battleships design and operational history, published by the Naval Institute Press. Winklareth presents a comprehensive account of the battle of the Denmark Strait .this well researched book will help any reader interested in the Battle of the Denmark Strait and its cast of characters. Michigan War Studies well illustrated quite readable enthusiasts of the Bismarck and those interested in naval surface warfare episode will find this book worthwhile Naval HistoryThis is a must book for any serious student of naval history. It would be a great addition to any World War II buff. Kepler´s Military History goes beyond the minute details of the battle and attempts to understand how the battle fit into the larger picture of global relations, extending years into the past to the resurrections of HMS Hood and the eventual sinking of the notorious Bismarck, and the uncertain future of both German and British warships...provides an excellent account of naval development, expansion, and decline from the era before World War I to after World War II, and of the fates of vessels Prinz Eugen and Rodney, and lasting interest in Bismarck and the battle, as underwater explorers uncover the remnants of the battle thousands of meters below the surface, showing how Battle of Denmark Strait affected world events and continues to affect historical memory.Nautical Research Journal´´
