What could possibly connect the famous sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and a WWII German U-boat loaded with a mysterious cargo? In this tribute to the 100th anniversary of the famous disaster, Chris Angus takes the reader on an adventure that includes shipwreck survivors, stolen treasures, a race across the Arctic and a century-old journal that holds the key to the connection and solving the mystery. Laura Engalls is an anthropologist working with the Inuit in Greenland when she’s shown the diary of sixteen year old Titanic survivor Samuel Meade – a diary whose story holds clues to the whereabouts of missing Titanic treasure. She enlists the help of reporter and Titanic fanatic Matt Mosher, as well as native Greenlander Ulrik, to uncover the truth. Together they begin an adventure that takes them across the inhospitable ice fields of Greenland. However, they soon discover they are not the only ones trying to unravel the mystery. What ensues is a tale of intrigue, international thievery and murder that ranges across 100 years, from the sinking of the famous ship and a plot hatched by Hitler himself to the machinations of present-day neo-Nazis and a modern-day treasure hunt for the truth. 1. Many great accounts of the fateful night of April 14th and 15th of 1912 have been told about the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Over the past one hundred and one years, the stories of the people and the disaster have been explained in art, movies, books, music, and verse. This audiobook begins with two original poems I have written to commemorate the ship´s first, last, and only voyage and the heroics demonstrated by some of those souls on board, some who survived and others who did not. Other wonderful and historic poems from the years immediately following the disaster are included here along with musical tributes. Some of the poems are famous, while others were penned by unknown poets. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Trevor Palczynski. ´Isaacson´s scholarship is impressive-he cites not only primary sources but secondary materials by art critics, essayists, and da Vinci´s other biographers. This is a monumental tribute to a titanic figure.´ - Publisher´s Weekly ´To read this magnificent biography of Leonardo da Vinci is to take a tour through the life and works of one of the most extraordinary human beings of all time in the company of the most engaging, informed, and insightful guide imaginable. Walter Isaacson is at once a true scholar and a spellbinding writer. And what a wealth of lessons there are to be learned in these pages.´ David McCullough Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo´s astonishing notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Walter Isaacson weaves a narrative that connects his art to his science. He shows how Leonardo´s genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy. He produced the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and technology. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history´s most creative genius. His creativity, like that of other great innovators, came from having wide-ranging passions. He peeled flesh off the faces of cadavers, drew the muscles that move the lips, and then painted history´s most memorable smile. He explored the math of optics, showed how light rays strike the cornea, and produced illusions of changing perspectives in The Last Supper. Isaacson also describes how Leonardo´s lifelong enthusiasm for staging theatrical productions informed his paintings and inventions. Leonardo´s delight at combining diverse passions remains the ultimate recipe for creativity. So, too, does his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical. His life should remind us of the importance of instilling, both in ourselves and our children, not just received knowledge but a willingness to question it-to be imaginative and, like talented misfits and rebels in any era, to think different.
Intimate and illuminating, this is the story of American icon Ernest Hemingway´s life, compiled by the steward of the Hemingway estate and featuring contributions by his son and grandson. For many people, Ernest Hemingway remains more a compilation of myths than a person: soldier, sportsman, lover, expat, and of course, writer. But the actual life underneath these various legends remains elusive; what did he look like as a laughing child or young soldier? What did he say in his most personal letters? How did the train tickets he held on his way from France to Spain or across the American Midwest transform him, and what kind of notes, for future stories or otherwise, did he take on these journeys? Ernest Hemingway: Artifacts from a Life answers these questions, and many others. Edited and with an introduction by the manager of the Hemingway estate, featuring a foreword by Hemingway’s son Patrick and an afterword by his grandson Seán, this rich and illuminating book tells the story of a major American icon the moments he saw and the thoughts he had every day. It is a one-of-a-kind, stunning tribute to one of the most titanic figures in literature. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Katakis.
